Safari Summary

This unique safari is designed to give you a journey of a lifetime through the magnificent Zambezi Valley.

Vintage walking
An exclusive, classic walking safari, with portable mobile camp and the thrill of seeing some of Africa's most prolific wildlife on foot. Visitors leave having appreciated an extraordinary journey. From the moment you arrive you are transported to a bygone age an echo of the 1920s.

There is nothing quite like a walk through the African bush. Not only does the excitement of encounters with big game on foot, but also the detail of the environment, leave one with an intimate appreciation of creation.

Our mobile walking safaris take place within the Chiawa Game Management Area and the Zambezia Wildlife Sanctuary, protected areas adjacent to the Lower Zambezi National Park. We walk from the Zambezi River itself into the uncharted wilds of the Zambezi escarpment hills to the north. Without roads and accessible only by foot, the area is outstandingly beautiful and each party on safari has endless miles of pristine, remote bush to explore. Each safari takes place entirely at the pace required of each group.

The area is home to an abundance of animal species, with the most prolific big game populations inhabiting the flatlands close to the Zambezi River. Throughout the safari we are likely to find a fascinating diversity of wildlife, from elephants, lion, leopard and antelopes, to a wide variety of birdlife.

The fully-appointed mobile camp, including gramophone and squeeze box for an occasional soiree, provides all the elegance and comfort of travel in style: fine dining, elegant attention to detail, and custom-built, traditional-style two-person white tents with hot showers. Discrete traditional bush toilets are also dug. Everything is provided for a successful safari.

Lodge stay Kasaka ( www.kasakariverlodge.com )
We head downstream to Kasaka River Lodge. Here we go with the flow- one day is never like the next. As the sun sets, why not enjoy an aperitif on an island overlooking the river? We plan ahead so that you can enjoy these moments.

Safaris at Kasaka River Lodge include a range of experiences to cater for every level of adventure including morning and evening game drives in open 4x4 vehicles, game walks, painting, canoeing, fishing and sundowners on the mighty Zambezi River. The Lower Zambezi is renowned for its excellent fishing and fly fishing, particularly for the voracious tiger fish, is becoming increasingly popular. Short canoe trips down the river can also be arranged.

For those with artistic flair, painting and photography safaris with professional wildlife artists can be arranged. Here you will take your equipment in to the bush to seek out subjects of your choice in the most magnificent settings. The Lower Zambezi is a photographer's paradise where one can capture wildlife scenes against a landscape of water and African vistas.

Cultural tour
The philosophy at Kasaka Lodge is to combine a tranquil, off-the-beaten-track destination for guests with support of the local environment, culture and natural resources. With the exception of the management team, all staff at the Lodge are locally employed. Much of the produce used for the preparation of Lodge meals is purchased from small-scale garden farmers in the nearby game management area. Visits to local villages and the Magurameno Basic School will be arranged. You will learn about age-old traditions of the people and their local culture.

Lodge stay Mwambashi ( Mwambashi River Lodge )
We continue downstream. The choice is yours travel by motor boat, vehicle or canoe to arrive at Mwambashi River Lodge, deep in the Lower Zambezi National Park. Beneath shady trees on the riverside, the most beautifully located lodge awaits you. Here you spend the next 3 nights in large, exquisitely-appointed, East Africa-style tents on platforms, each with an en-suite bathroom. The days provide you with opportunities to take in the heart of the National Park: explore this game-abundant area by vehicle or on foot, canoe further downstream or spend more time on the river fishing from motorboats. Morning and evening/night game drives ensure an outstanding exposure to the wilderness and the prolific wildlife within. The area is reputed for its exceptional big cat sightings.

Livingstone Victoria Falls
From the Lower Zambezi we fly to Livingstone. On arrival we are transferred to either Sussi 'N Chuma (Star of Africa) or Tongabezi cottages, depending on the dates of your booking and various other factors. Both facilities offer high standards to bring your last three days of this trip to a close.

In Livingstone a number of outstanding attractions to experience are included in your tour price. Itinerary

Day 1: Vintage Safari
Arrive in Lusaka in the morning and board a 25-minute private flight to the Kayila bush airstrip where you are met by the Vintage Africa Safaris team. Then walk 10 to 15 minutes to your camp, an echo of the 1920s, set on the banks of the Zambezi.

There is nothing quite like a walk through the African bush, and the day is spent undertaking introductory walks in the surrounding area.

Accommodation: 1920s-style classic tents
Contractor: Vintage Africa Safaris

Day 2: Lower Zambezi
A full day to explore the area. You might decide to walk into the hills for a picnic lunch by a spring and enjoy a fantastic panorama of the Zambezi Valley. Later you return to your camp by the river. Walks are led by your guide and host.

Day 3: Lower Zambezi into the foothills
You break camp early to travel into the foothills of the escarpment. As you walk into undeveloped wilderness, the whole camp is transported and set nearby a river that runs from the hills. Your walk brings you through a game-rich area and you take time to learn more about the area's wildlife, tracks and signs, birds, vegetation and bush lore. If fresh tracks are found you can follow them and experience the thrill of walking up to animals, all the while safely guarded by an armed guide and an armed game scout. You arrive at the new site for tea.

Day 4: Lower Zambezi - hills
A day spent exploring the hills or walking the flatlands below camp. The area offers a remoteness accessible only on foot, and you stop to swim in deep pools of fresh water from hillside streams. Old elephant trails, used for generations, can be found traversing the hills.

Days 5 - 7: Kasaka River Lodge

In the morning, a 30-minute drive brings us to the Lodge.

Here we are accommodated in luxury tents, each with an elegantly-furnished en-suite bathroom, tastefully decorated with an authentic African flavour. The bar and dining area both nestle amongst huge tamarind trees and provide the perfect location for relaxing while watching the spectacle on the river below. Seek the tranquility of the newly-constructed thatched library by the river. A log fire burns on cooler evenings. Dining provided on a full-board basis with a 3-course meal in the evenings; house wine, beer and soft drinks are included. During the quieter part of the day, you may want to relax in loungers available poolside, overlooking the river. A small health spa is scheduled for completion during this season.

Days 8 10: Mwambashi River Lodge (or Sausage Tree Camp)

We spend the next 3 nights in large, exquisitely appointed East Africa-style tents on platforms, each with an en-suite bathroom. Here we could wish for nothing more, looked after by a first-class team; this ensures a host of amazing memories whilst we explore the heart of the Zambezi.
