Safari Summary

This unique safari is designed to give you a journey of a lifetime through the magnificent Zambezi Valley.

Vintage walking
An exclusive, classic walking safari, with portable mobile camp and the thrill of seeing some of Africa's most prolific wildlife on foot. Visitors leave having appreciated an extraordinary journey. From the moment we arrive we are transported to a by-gone age an echo of the 1920's.

There is nothing quite like a walk through the African bush. Not only the excitement of viewing big game on foot, but also the detail of the environment, leaves one with an intimate appreciation of creation.

Our mobile walking safaris take place within the Chiawa Game Management Area and Zambezia Wildlife Sanctuary, protected wildlife areas adjacent to the Lower Zambezi National Park. We walk from the Zambezi river itself into the uncharted wilds of the Zambezi escarpment hills to the north. Without roads and accessible only by foot, the area is outstandingly beautiful and each party on safari will have endless miles of pristine, remote bush theirs to explore Each safari takes place entirely at the pace required of each group.

The area is home to an abundance of animal species, the most prolific big game populations inhabiting the flatlands close to the Zambezi river. Throughout the safari we are likely to encounter a fascinating diversity of wildlife, from elephants, lion, leopard and the antelopes, to a wide variety of birdlife.

The fully appointed mobile camp, including gramophone and squeeze box for an occasional soiree, facilitates all the elegance and comfort of travel in style. Custom built, traditional style spacious white tents sleep two. Discrete, traditional bush lavatories are built nearby camp and with hot showers, fine dining and elegant attention to detail, everything is provided for a successful safari.

Lodge stay – Kasaka (www.kasakariverlodge.com)
We head downstream to unwind at Kasaka River Lodge . Here we “go with the flow”- one day is never like the next. As the sun sets, why not enjoy an aperitif on an island overlooking the river. We plan ahead so that you can enjoy these moments.

Safaris at Kasaka River Lodge include a range of experiences to cater for every level of adventure – including morning and evening game drives in open 4x4 vehicles, game walks, painting, canoeing, fishing and sundowners on the mighty Zambezi River. The Lower Zambezi is renowned for its excellent fishing and fly fishing is becoming increasingly more popular – particularly for the voracious tiger fish. Short trips down the river by canoe can also be arranged.

Artistic Flair painting and photography safaris with professional wildlife artists can be arranged. Here you will take your equipment in to the bush to seek out subjects of your choice in the most magnificent settings. The Lower Zambezi is a photographer’s paradise where one can capture wildlife scenes against a landscape of water and African vistas.

Cultural tour
The philosophy at Kasaka Lodge is to combine a tranquil, off the beaten track destination for guests with support of the local environment, culture and natural resources. With the exception of the management team, all staff at the Lodge are locally employed. Much of the produce used for the preparation of Lodge meals is purchased from small scale garden farmers in the nearby game management area. Visits to local villages and the Magurameno Basic School will be arranged. You will learn about age-old traditions of the people and their local culture.

Overland to Victoria Falls
Next we travel by road to Kariba, taking in a tour of the Dam wall, ending the day at Warthogs Bush Camp. Warthogs consists of thatched “A” frame bashas (basically a sleeping platform on stilts). There is a cash bar, swimming pool and elephants, hippo and zebra are regular visitors. We continue by houseboat and cross the lake to the shores of Matusadona National Park, overnighting on the houseboat. We spend a full day exploring the National Park. Matusadona is best known as a refuge of the black rhino, as well as being home to all the other big game. Fishing for Tigerfish on the boat is an exhilarating experience and bream fishing can reward you with a tasty supper! For those that wish to relax, there’s little that beats a houseboat!

We then transfer to our 4x4 and travel through a very remote rural area of Africa. The road at times can be less than perfect, but offers some wonderful scenery. A picnic lunch somewhere along the way (just say when you are hungry) and we reach Binga hot springs. Soaking in the hot spring with a G&T watching the sun go down is the best way to rid yourself of the dust from the days drive. Accommodation is in chalets with en-suite bathrooms.

On arrival at Victoria Falls Town you will be transferred to your accommodation to settle in. During your stay at Victoria Falls and included in your tour price you will tour the scenic falls in your group or you may prefer to go alone. You can choose three of the following (any additional activities will be at your own cost): A Scenic Helicopter Flight over the Falls and surrounding area, a Micro-light flight, White water rafting at this world famous location, Bungi-jumping, as well as enjoying an evening cruise and a day visit to the Livingstone Museum in Livingstone for those interested. There will be enough time for the more adventurous to choose some additional activities at your own expense which are available at the Falls which is considered the Adventure Capital of Africa. This is a great place to pick up some local curios made by local people for your friends and family at home.

Our choices of lodges at Victoria Falls are dependant on your time of booking. The lodges we use are:
Victoria Falls Safari Lodge and Lokuthula Lodges www.vfsl.com
Sussi ‘N’ Chuma Lodge www.star-of-africa.com

Day 1 Vintage Safari
Arrive in Lusaka, Zambia and connect with a private flight organized by us to Kayila bush airstrip – a 25 minute flight. Here we are met by the Vintage Safaris team and walked from the aircraft some 10 – 15 minutes to camp, an echo of the 1920’s, set on the banks of the Zambezi.
Walking within the African bush is an extraordinary privilege and the day is spent undertaking introductory walks and learning more about the character of the surrounding area.
Accommodation: 1920’s style classic tents

Day 2
Lower Zambezi: A full day to explore the area. We might decide to walk into the hills for a picnic lunch by a spring and enjoy a fantastic panorama of the Zambezi valley. Walks are led by your guide and host and we return to camp on the river.

Day 3
Lower Zambezi – into the foothills: We break camp early to travel into the foothills of the escarpment. As we walk into undeveloped wilderness, the complete portable camp is transported and set nearby a river as it runs from the hills. Our walk brings us through a game rich area and we take time to learn more about the areas’ wildlife, recognizing tracks and signs, birding, vegetation study and bushlore.
If fresh tracks are found we can follow them to experience the thrill of walking up to animals, all the while safely guided with both armed guide and game scout’s expertise. We arrive at the new site for tea.

Day 4
Lower Zambezi - hills: A day spent exploring the hills or walking the flatlands below camp. The area offers remoteness accessible only on foot as we find deep pools of fresh water in hillside streams to stop and swim. Old elephant trails, used for generations, can be found traversing the hills.

Days 5-7: Kasaka River Lodge
Transfer to Kasaka River Lodge – a 30 minute drive.

Here we are accommodated in luxury tents, tastefully decorated with an authentic African flavour. Each has an elegantly furnished en-suite bathroom.
