Hwange National Park was created in 1927 and was previously the Royal Hunting Grounds for the Matabele Chief Mzilikazi and was judged as being unfit for agricultural or other use in the early 1900's by the newly arrived settlers. However the surprising variety of wildlife found in this dry Kalahari sand area was remarkable and thus this land was set aside as a protected area for wildlife. There are currently between 20,000 and 30,000 Elephant in this park as well as a large variety of other animals including Roan and Sable antelope. Lion sightings are regular and in addition sightings of Painted or Wild Dogs are regular and there is an ongoing research and development programme of these endangered animals in this area.

Upon arrival at Mana Pools Airstrip the drive will be approximately 30 minutes through Jesse Bush and Mopane habitats to your first nights camp.
Mana Pools National Park is situated along 80km of the Zambezi River, making for the best game viewing on the lower Zambezi. Here one can participate in canoeing, walking and/or game drives - or simply relax and take in the breathtaking beauty. Mana Pools is consistently rated in the top ten of Africa's National Parks.
Day 8
Mana Pools - Mana Shoreline Canoeing Safari
The aim is to be in the canoes and on the water in time to watch the sunrise. This is one of the most magical times of the day and you will be enchanted as you drift along quietly, listening to the sounds of the African bush wakening to a new day. Paddle for a couple of hours before stopping the canoes to breakfast under a grove of acacia trees. After breakfast set off on a walk into the floodplains and surrounding woodlands. This is a great time to try and catch some of the predators before they hide up for the day. You may even be lucky enough to spot one or more of the diurnal animals making their way down to the river.
Returning to the canoes you head downstream to an area renowned for its huge old elephants bulls. Your guides try to time the trips to catch them swimming or wading out to the grass islands where you will be able to glide quietly alongside these awesome giants.
Day 9
Mana Shoreline Canoeing Safari
Today is the day that you enter the 'Wilderness Area' of Mana Pools National Park where there is limited access to people and vehicles. Breakfast may be taken on the Mbere River floodplain which compromises stunning acacia woodland with large patches of thick 'Adrenaline' grass - a habitat much favoured by all the predators. Towards the end of the dry season it also hosts large groups of female elephants with their babies.
Day 10
Mana Pools - Return to Victoria Falls
Depending on your departure time, or if you are moving on to a canoe trail or alternative camp, you may either take another early walk before breakfast or have a bit of a sleep in! After that, there will be a short game drive to the airstrip where we bid you farewell.
A very detailed daily itinerary will be be provided upon booking.
