Forest Lodge Explorers - 14 or 16 Days
'Malawi' - The Warm Heart of Africa!

Join us with guest leader Peter Schatens with 25 years of working in Africa as an International Forester to explore Malawi's Forest Lodges. We will experience during your journey a wonderful balance of people, culture, food, wildlife and ofcourse the wonderful spectacle of Lake Malawi! We suggest you add to this Safari our Complete Zambezi safari to Lower Zambezi NP or our option to North Luangua NP in Zambia - A real treat! Take the time to view the wonderful pictures below!

Tour Highlights
Our guest guide Peter Schatens will enhance your journey along with South African Field/Trails Guide Timothy Jackson of Vintage Safaris and our team guide & driver who will be with us from Land and Lake Safaris. We have teamed with Mark Sprong who was born in South Africa and now a resident of Malawi for over two decades! Mark operates a top notch operation in Malawi and has helped us bring you this wonderful journey! Timothy spent many months exploring/researching Malawi to bring you this trip of a lifetime with three guides on board to give you the attention you deserve! Our groups will be no smaller than 6 or larger than 7! Groups smaller than 6 are possible at additional cost!

Note: 2 options - Overland Journey or Charter flight to Nyika National Park - The Overland option uses more price sensitive accomodation where possible but also allows for two more locations to be visited en-route - Vwaza Marsh and Livingstonia!

Both Options include:

  • Staying on Lake Malawi at the Livingstonia Beach Hotel near Salima for all the lake activities and time for relaxation.
  • Liwonde National Park - This wonderful location on the Shire river that drains Lake Malawi offers superb boat safaris. Abundant bird life, elephants and hippos are common. Time spent on the Shire River is a real novelty.
  • Zomba Plateau is one of Timothy's favorites - This mountain offers superb views with the time to do some exploration that reflects your own interests. The gardens on the mountain reflect a real paradise!
  • Mount Mulanje - Set amongst tea plantations and rising up from the surrounding countryside Mount Mulanje is a spectacle unto it 'self - Mount Mulanje is a Global Biosphere Reserve meaning it is an international important wildlife habitat where many of the species found here are found nowhere else in the world - e.g. The Mulanje Cedar tree that locals create wonderful 'chip carved' furniture from.
  • Dedza Pottery - We will enjoy sunset from the top of Dedza Mountain. You will have plenty of time to select some pottery to either take with you or ship home from this world famous pottery.
  • Nyika National Park - A stay here will take you to yet a different world - Sightings of Roan Antelope only found in a few locations in Africa and very good chances of seeing Leopard will make this excursion a true memory. Nyika is famed for orchids and flowers and miles of pristine undulating grasslands.
  • (Overland option only) - Visits Vwaza Marsh for an overnight visit - A short walk and a night time safari will be a treat here - Great birding and hippo sightings are guaranteed along Lake Kazuni's shoreline - Hopefully the Elephants will wonder through camp to end another special day!
  • (Overland option only) - Visits Livingstonia on return from Nyika National Park where we will stay at the Stone House and have plenty of time to explore the area for over a day.

If you wish to have a detailed trip itinerary please just ask us!

Guests wishing to stay at our guest cottage in Salima for a longer period before/after the safari can organize this with us. Don't forget to consider adding the trip to Shiwa Ngandu(Africa House) & North Luangua National Park to this safari. Optional trips to Victoria Falls and the Lower Zambezi for our walking safaris are easy to organize - please ask for details!

Lake and Land Safaris has just bought these new Toyota Land Cruisers which will be ours during this safari - You can't get better vehicles than these!

These Landcruisers have opening roof tops for best game viewing - when we are in the National Parks under the care of the Lodges for game drives we use their open top vehicles to provide better game veiwing opportunities

Liwonde National Park - situated on the Shire River offers wonderful night time sounds and supurb birdlife viewing - Liwonde is well known for there boat safaris where elephants and hippo sightings are common place

The Little Bee-Eater - what a delightful bird! This one was only a few feet from my head around the Lodge of the Liwonde National Park

Zomba Plateau - You can see the smoke that rises up over the homes below - if you listen carefully you can hear the voices of near by villages playing music in the evenings - Views from here are known as some the best in Africa!

A super sighting of a Leopard - Peter and I were delighted - When we were up at Nyika this April we were driving along when suddenly this leopard in full daylight stopped a few yards away from us - This incredible cat stayed around us for 12 minutes before making it's way off into the bush! Nyika is well known for wonderful night time Leopard sightings - You will all have a night drive to have the chance to see these wonderful cats - to see them in the daytime is rare! We were so lucky! You just never know when it will happen!

Vast numbers of grass species grow at Nyika

The Nyika Zebra is different - It is the same species as the Burchell's or Plains Zebra but has stripes down to it's hooves and no shadow stripes!
On our last planning tour this April 2007 we gave a ride to many of the Nyika staff who were leaving the park for the weekend!
